5 Iconic Sports Trophies in Australia
Australian Open Tennis
The annual tennis competition is held in January and features men’s and women’s singles; mixed doubles, and much more! Known as the “Grand slam of the Asia/Pacific” it was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during extreme weather conditions. Women’s singles winners are presented with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup and men’s singles winners the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup which stands at over 40 cm tall.
Melbourne Cup
The prestigious thoroughbred horse race dates back to 1861. The annual event occurs in November where trainers from around the world compete in a race of just over 3,200 metres for the chance to win the Emirates Melbourne Cup. The solid 18ct gold trophy is awarded to the winner, which is lovingly handcrafted by Hardy Brothers Jewellers.
Bathurst 1000
The Bathurst 1000, an iconic V8 supercar race over a distance of 1,000kms. Held at Bathurst annually on the second weekend of October, race winners are presented with the Peter Brock Trophy in commemoration of the most successful driver in the race’s’ history. Originally made from solid silver, since 2006 Hardy Brothers Jewellers have made the trophy which weighs in at 2.5kg and stands at 50 cm tall.
Bledisloe Cup
Rugby union competition between national teams of Australia and New Zealand originating in the 1930s and is the “ultimate symbol of trans-Tasman rivalry!”. Lord Bledisloe, the governor-general of New Zealand donated the trophy for the two countries to compete for. The game has been held annually since the 1982 and the nation winners take with them the Bledisloe Cup.
Australian Open Golf
The oldest and most prestigious golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. The best golfers worldwide come together at the Royal Sydney Golf Club to compete for the Stonehaven Cup. The original trophy is held at Golf Australia Museum, where the winner’s name is engraved on the trophy and a replica is given to the champion for one year.
