The 59th annual Grammy awards will be taking place on February 12th 2017. The name “Grammy” is abbreviated from the original name, “Gramophone.” The Grammys are the musical equivalent to the Oscars, bringing together many talented individuals and groups from the industry.
When Did It Originate?
The first annual Grammy awards were held on May 4th, 1959. Two formal events were held simultaneously, one in Los Angeles and one in New York. Many years later, in 1975, the awards were televised each year. This helped to promote the musical artists, leading to an increase in sales of records, stickers, posters and other band merchandise.
How Does Voting Work?
Nomination and voting procedures are conducted by selected members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). They have access to a private, online listening program that enables them to listen to all the nominations.
The Grammy trophies all take the form of a gilded gramophone (hence the name ‘Grammy’). They are made from gold-plated zinc alloy. The original trophy design was revamped in 1990 to ensure improved strength, size and grandeur. Each year, winners from every category are presented with Grammy awards. Those who miss out on winning a category receive a medal in reward of their nomination.
