Did you miss out on watching the Golden Globes this year? No worries, you still have the Oscars to look forward to. (Which is essentially the Olympics of award shows.) The 88th Academy Awards takes place on February 28th at the famed Dolby Theatre, Hollywood. It will be hosted by Chris Rock. He previously hosted in 2005, when Best Picture was presented to Million Dollar Baby.
The Golden Age
The first Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929 after the film conglomerate MGM had the idea in 1927. This is during the ‘Golden Age’ where the ‘Big Five’ film studios (MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, RKO, Paramount and Warner Bros.) monopolised the industry. Smaller film studios (‘Little Three’: United Artists, Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures) were, of course, able to produce and distribute films. Each film studio managed their own actors/actresses who were the faces of the respective studios. In 1929, the first film to win Outstanding Picture (now Best Picture) was Wings (MGM). The other film studios which won awards in the first year were 20th Century Fox, Paramount and United Artists.
The term ‘Oscar’ was rumoured to be coined after Bette Davis said that the butt of the sculpture looked like her then husband’s (Harmon Oscar Nelson). The design remains unchanged, aside from slight size changes. The statues were initially made of bronze and plated with 24 karat gold. After many years and metal shortages, they became a gold-plated metal statue. It stands at 34.3 cm tall and weighs 3.9 kg. According to the Oscars Statuette Facts, it takes 3 -4 weeks to produce 50 statues – pretty impressive!
