10 Surprising Facts About Olympic Medals

  1. 1894 marked the first modern Olympiad. There were no gold medals featured at the event. Silver medals were awarded to first place and copper for second place.
  2. In the 1900 Paris Games, winners received valuable works of art instead of medals.
  3. Athletes that are placed in first to eighth position receives an Olympic Diploma to commemorate their participation. Support staff, event officials, volunteers and other associated people also receive commemorative medals and diplomas.
  4. In 2013 a huge meteorite exploded over Chelyabinsk in Russia, weighing between 12,000 to 13,000 tonnes! Chelyabinsk officials minted fifty medals containing pieces of the meteorite and ten of these were given to gold medalists at the 2014 Sochi Games.
  5. Since 2012, there has not been a solid gold medal. Regulations state that even gold medals must be at least 92.5% silver and plated with gold.
  6. If the Rio medals were made of pure gold, their value based on today’s gold price would be approximately US$21,000 (that’s over $27,000 Australian!)
  7. Ranking in as the most winners of gold medals is the USA, with 976 gold followed by the Soviet Union in second place with 395 gold medals. Third place goes to the UK with 236 gold medals.
  8. Edwin Flack was the first Australian gold medalist in Athens 1896, taking home gold for 800m and 1500m in the running event.
  9. Sarah Durack also known as “Fanny” won the first Women’s gold medal for Australia for 100m freestyle swimming in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics.
  10. The Australian record for the most gold medals is held by Ian Thorpe, who has won five gold medals for swimming.
